One of the most important but hardest things I think we are supposed to learn in this life is to reconcile our spirits and our bodies, something that the opposition is clearly trying to keep us from learning. We were sent to this earth to learn how to use or bodies for good, to keep them healthy, to train them to follow the counsel of our minds (not vice versa), to make families, and to LOVE them. It is no surprise that the adversary is trying everything in his power to get us to fail at every single one of those points. Look at the trials so many people are facing such as addictions, eating disorders, obesity, or the messages the world broadcasts about the unimportance of motherhood or the “shame” it brings to a woman’s body?! None of it is true! All of it is Satan’s attempt to keep us from enjoying the full measure of our bodies. He will never have a body and he wants us to fall for as many of these pitfalls as he can.
Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to fall for it anymore. I have in the past (and who hasn’t) and I’m done. I’m embracing my body, for it’s strengths, its weaknesses, it’s talents, it’s shape, it’s size, and it’s divine purpose to bring babies into this world someday. I don’t want a thigh gap (because legs are for walking not for instagramming,) or a six pack (because carbs are for eating,) and I hope my belly gets as big as a beach ball one day when I begin my role as a mother (because I truly believe that’s my divine purpose in this life!) (Sidenote: Please don’t take offense intended if you do have a thigh gap or a six pack, I’m simply saying that it’s probably not in the cards for my specific body type and there’s no reason I should hold myself to that standard created by social media 🙂 I want to take care of my body because I believe we will all be resurrected and inherit our bodies for eternity, so I believe it to be an integral part of me I should care for, respect, and love. It was picked out for me by my Father in Heaven and he wanted me to have it. What an amazing gift. I’m so grateful for my healthy mind and body, that I can walk, run and flip! The world has no business telling me how my body should and shouldn’t look so I’m done listening to the chatter, and so should you! Whether your body is big or small, tall or short, healthy or unhealthy, give your body what it needs, the food, the medical attention, the medicine, the vitamins, the exercise, the rest, the sun, the play, and the work to fulfill it’s and your purpose in this life. Then think often of your purpose, about what you’re doing here on earth, and you will be happy!
Now, does that mean I’ll stop wearing self-tanner, no. Stop wearing makeup or coloring my hair, no. Never get botox when I’m older, not necessarily. I’ll probably never stop decorating my home either. I decorate the things I love. I love adding my own personal touch to something and making it mine or changing things up to start a new chapter. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.
So, I’ve gotten together with two of my favorite modest bloggers ,Michelle from The Mumsy Blog and Keara from Modest Style to celebrate our bodies in their different shapes and sizes and talk about how we love them during swim season! Swimsuit Tips for Short Pencil Shapes
I am a short pencil shape with a short torso. I am 5’3″ and all legs! I only have about 3 inches between where my ribs end and my hips begin so there isn’t much distance there to come in at the waist, hence the pencil shape. I also have quite a low-set chest. Since I have such a short torso, it’s not too hard for me to find two piece swimsuits that cover most of my stomach.I picked this blue floral bralette and matching ruched blue floral high rise bottoms from Lime Ricki. While shopping on Lime Ricki’s website I had a feeling that this suit would look a lot different on me than it did on their model. I went into the store and tried it on and I was right! The bralette and the swim bottoms meet together right above my belly button, precisely what I hoped! Sometimes it pays to be a shorty!
If you’re short you can wear lots of different suits modestly so have fun! If you’re looking to lengthen out your body and appear taller you might not want to go for a mid-section divide like I did, but I don’t mind it. Pencil shapes don’t often have much of a change in measurement at the natural waist so changing fabrics or wearing a midikini meeting at the natural waist can create a waistline effect. Who ever needed a tiny waist anyway 🙂
If you’re not so short or you have a longer torso, Lime Ricki has tons of other options, and various bottoms with even higher rise than these. I wouldn’t recommend this bralette on a taller girl as it will appear much shorter (unless you have some super high rise bottoms to meet them.) You can see this same suit on Lime Ricki’s instagram to estimate how it would fit on you if you are taller. For anyone taller than me, these three swim tankini tops here, here, and here are made of the same blue floral print but are long tankini length. And don’t worry tallies, I’ve got two suits coming up soon that will be perfect for you! 😉
A little bit about my accessories! My sunglasses are from Called to Surf, clogs are from Old Navy, earrings from Truly Kustom, and my stack of mixed metals bracelets is made up of pieces from Brin & Bell, Alex & Ani, Deseret Book, and even a handmade bracelet from my sister Tori! She made me this silver bracelet in the middle in her high school jewelry class and I couldn’t be more impressed with the design and the craftmanship! It perfectly matches the water. I love it and nobody else has it!
Now go read about Michelle’s tips and swimsuit she chose on The Mumsy Blog. Michelle is amazing! She had her 4th baby 2 weeks before this photo! Momalicious and loving it!
