A modesty hack is when you take a piece of clothing and make it conform to your personal modesty standards (instead of the other way around!) It is empowering and thrilling to discover that you can alter your clothing to make it fit you and your lifestyle. I fall in love with pieces all the time that I wouldn’t wear but over the years I’ve learned all of the tricks to make them work so that I do can successfully wear them without sacrificing my modesty standards. I’ve got a list of all of my favorite tips and tricks on my Modesty Essentials Directory, and this particular look will focus on two of my favorites: nude layering tees and skirt extenders!
Ever since I discovered slip extenders I’ve been a total fan! Slip extenders are slips with decorative hems intended for wearing under short skirts or dresses to lengthen them! Good slip extenders work like magic, effortlessly transitioning a dress from too short to perfect in a matter of seconds.
I have recently discovered a new favorite online shop that specializes in skirt extenders and has the largest selection I’ve ever found: Dress and Charm! They have so many different slip lengths, styles, and colors! They are the first place I’ve found with slip extenders offered in styles besides basic lace, like these layered ruffles! I have taken to collecting the basics (white, black, and grey) as well as ordering a few colors to go specifically with dresses I’ve been wanting to wear.
Take this dress for example. I found this dress while browsing on Poshmark (a used clothing selling/shopping app) and immediately fell in love with it! It however had two glaring problems as a dress for me: it has a sheer neckline that plunges to the waist and a hemline that only reached my thigh. I knew these were things I could work with so I grabbed it and with a little work it turned out just as I’d hoped!
I’m wearing Dress & Charm’s Navy Ruffle Slip Extender (which lucky for me is more of a mix between navy and cobalt blue). It comfortably fits underneath this short blue dress and effortlessly visually extends the dress’s length. I love how perfectly it works! I especially love that it matches the color of the dress. I tried this dress with a couple of other contrasting colors of slip extenders that I have but this was my favorite.
This dress also required a nude layering tee to modest-ify it’s plunging mesh neckline. I layered a nude layering tee and I was a good to go!
The moral of this style story is, there are plenty of modest shops where you can find already-modest outfits and dresses (see my curated list in my Modest Clothing Directory if you don’t believe me!) but for those times you just fall in love with a piece of clothing you just have to have, with a little creativity (and my Modesty Essentials Directory as your guide) you can make even the hardest piece work modestly for you!
